Understanding Anxiety: Causes, symptoms and solutions

Having the feelings of anxiety, panic attacks and stress can really cause problems with your health, self-esteem and confidence, both at home, socially and at work. It begins to rule your life, often the feeling gets worse and we begin to make excuses to not go out or to avoid situations. We shrink away and can even become depressed. The negative spiral goes downwards and this can, in turn, unintentionally affect those around you and can cloud the decisions you make (what we call brain-fog).

There are many reasons why someone struggles to control their feelings and emotions and this can lead to a state of being overwhelmed to the point of an internal battle in your mind. Be assured that you are not alone and it is more common than you may think. It can happen at any age too and affects both children and adults alike.

Causes:

Anxiety is a by-product of a traumatic experience. The thought loops within trauma can create immense upset and turmoil to your mind. Reliving a moment as if it is happening now and still in the moment, often with the feelings driving other emotions and responses too. Anxiety is a safety mechanism. Your brain’s activated limbic system is looking for any potential threat and preventing you from going near that threat. Think of it as a ‘safety radar’ and after a traumatic experience its sensitivity is turned up to maximum. This then prevents you from doing things as it releases stress chemicals into your body (think of the fight or flight phrase everyone has heard of). It’s a little more complex than that, however in the main, your brain is telling you to be on Red Alert.

Symptoms:

Anxiety can be displayed in various ways and characteristics. The most common being, but not limited to, the following:

Increased heart rate
Fast, shallow breathing
Pupil dilation

Sweating
Dry mouth
Physical shaking
Brain fog
Aggressive response
Desire to run away
Appear frozen in stature
Distressed

Solutions:

It is important to understand that Anxiety is the fear of what may POTENTIALLY happen and is also known as Anticipatory Anxiety.
There are a variety of methods to disrupt an anxiety attack ‘in the moment’ and you can utilise my Fx3 method which is free to download from the Resources page of the
improvemymindset.com website.

The best solution is to release the trauma that has been the root cause. By releasing the trauma from the brain, anxiety and any other trauma symptoms can be removed or alleviated. Watch the Trauma Tree video on the Resources page to understand what happens from a trauma. To release the trauma, I specialise in making that happen rapidly and effectively using my Psy-TaP methods. It can be done online via video call too, so it doesn’t matter where you are reading this, potentially we can work together.
