Being a nervous driver or not being able to drive due to driving anxiety can really cause problems of feeling stuck and embarrassed, both socially and at work. Holding a driving licence is now considered essential, especially where public transport isn't available or practical. There are many reasons why someone gets anxious in a car or other vehicle. Be assured that you are not alone and being a nervous driver or having driving anxiety is more common than you may think.
Learning to drive is a difficult skill to master and affects many people creating nervousness and anxiety. Then you have the tests to take too. Many crumble under the pressure of trying to pass and often fail at the crucial moment. This causes upset and a spiral down in confidence. Having the right driving instructor is very important, but your own mindset and confidence is important too. This is where I can assist you.
You may have had a traumatic experience that stops you getting back into a vehicle, or just the thought of driving a certain journey may create driving fear or anxiety. Many people now experience Motorway Anxiety Disorder due to a traumatic or negative experience. Being a nervous driver is very common, as is being a nervous passenger.
It might also be that you find that you are often overcome by road rage or the urge to drive too fast when really you should feel calm. Do you get burnout from long distance lorry driving? Again, I'm here to enable you to take back control.
Having the feelings of anxiety, panic attacks and stress while driving can really cause problems with your health, self-esteem and confidence, both at home, socially and at work. It begins to rule your life, often the feeling will get worse and we begin to make excuses to not go out or to avoid situations where driving is necessary. We shrink away and can even become depressed. The negative spiral goes downwards and this can, in turn, unintentionally affect those around you and can cloud the decisions you make and the thoughts you have (what we call brain-fog).
Not being fully in control at the wheel also has an impact on your judgement, observation and mood. It can also be a driving offence too if it becomes a major issue and not noted on your licence. Let's work together to prevent this from happening, so you are free to enjoy driving again.
There are many reasons why someone struggles to control their feelings and emotions when driving and this can lead to a state of being overwhelmed to the point of an internal battle in your mind. Be assured that you are not alone and it is more common than you may think. It can happen at any age too and affects either sex. The thought loops within trauma can create immense upset and turmoil to your mind. Reliving a moment as if it is happening now and still in the moment, often with the feelings causing other emotions and responses too. The thought of a particular route or having to use a motorway creates a fear and you'll do whatever you can to avoid driving it.
People have these internal battles for lots of reasons. You may have had a traumatic experience that stops you getting back in control of your habits, or just the thought of a situation may create anticipatory anxiety. There may be a recognised trigger or scenario, yet for some they feel like they are on a constant 'Red Alert' and their internal radar scanning ahead for any potential threat. Due to how the brain works in this state, it will find the next trigger and these often become more common and even simple things start to become an anxiety trigger.
Taking care of you
Your health is also affected due to the amount of Cortisol (the bad, stress-related chemical) your body releases. This chemical can lead to other health issues and can create the environment for the susceptibility to illness and disease. It might be that you find you are overcome by an urge or addiction to excessively eat, smoke, drink, take drugs or a combination, when really you should feel calm. Your sleep is likely to be affected too and so you become more tired and this then makes you more susceptible to being irritable/emotional, making poor decisions and more anxious. You often get 'Brain-fog' which slows your thinking or creates confusion. Oh, and you may worry excessively too! (See the thought loop pattern happening?!). Is it any wonder you feel the way you do?
There are many different methods, some natural, some taught in systems like CBT or Counseling, of 'coping' techniques. However, 'coping' is not enough and not the right solution, particularly with driving anxiety and fear. Why should you have to 'cope'?! I see many people or 'experts' talking about 'Coping Mechanisms'. To me, that isn't enough for you. I'm here to enable you to take control, rapidly and effectively and stop your downward spiral. With some methods they often prescribe medication or perhaps numerous CBT or counseling sessions. However, I firmly believe these are not ideal. Medication isn't always the answer, especially long-term, so I look to create a solution of removing your trauma so there's no need to 'cope'. A doctor may then consider your medication no longer necessary. Your body contains its own amazing chemistry set, so let's access and utilise those in the best way while altering your neuro-pathways too.
Counselling or CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) for 'coping' with anxiety, stress and panic attacks, in my personal opinion, does not remove the root cause from where it is attached in your brain. You end up having numerous sessions with them where you are made to repeatedly relive the traumatic 'event'. Why would you want to relive that event over and over again in a counselling session when that is what is causing the suffering in the first place?! Talking therapies may have their place, however, they have limited effectiveness and limited longevity as they simply don't shift the trauma that is residing in your brain. We want your trauma, anxiety and panic attacks gone as soon as possible! You've been through more than enough already with your trauma, let's not prolong it!

What's involved in working with me?
Once we have booked a session, video call, we will work together to break your chains that hold you back. We can often be done in just one session of about 90 mins. In my session you will understand what happens in your mind to cause the feelings you have, we will do the treatment process and then I will teach you how to maintain a great life and a positive mindset with your bespoke, ongoing neuro-health regime of brain exercises. These only take 5 minutes in your day, yet create great mental wellbeing and resilience.
Psy-TaP is a highly effective and rapid method of treatment and I'm very proud to be a Certificated Practitioner and a qualified Trauma Release Trainer. I'm very passionate about what I do as Psy-TaP is not just another hypnotherapy, CBT or counselling method. It's about rapidly removing the trauma (the root cause), separating the emotions from the event and banishing your defensive responses such as fears, anxiety and panic attacks. I am very passionate about my work and love to see people overcome their psychological barriers.
